On this page:

Equal Dreams aims to provide progressive SgSL courses suitable for beginners that build up towards advanced levels of SgSL proficiency — and those interested may even opt to transition to our sign language interpreter training course.

At Level 1, no prior experience is required — just an open-mind ready to learn, and hands warmed up for signing!

Learning Outcomes

Through direct and complete immersion in a no-voice, SgSL-only environment, students will learn to:

  • Exhibit receptive and expressive skills in fingerspelling and SgSL signs
  • Exhibit an understanding of basic linguistic rules in SgSL, and its parameters
  • Understand and apply the concept of visual-gestural communication when using SgSL
  • Develop an appreciation for Deaf culture and the diverse Deaf Community
  • Carry out basic conversations in SgSL about everyday life through the use of simple sentence structures

Equal Dreams’ SgSL curriculum is led and designed by our SgSL specialist, Andrew Tay, and co-curriculum developer, Yew Hau En. This is also done in consultation and collaboration with Deaf leaders and hearing interpreters.

Learning Platform

Google Classroom will be the central hub for your learning journey where you will be able to access course materials, assignments, discussions, and additional resources.

Participants will be registered onto our exclusive learning platform, SgSLcore. This platform contains additional resources to enrich your learning experience.

A Telegram group chat will be used for ease of communication between participants, instructors, and administrators. Announcements and other ad-hoc communications will be communicated through this channel.

Assignments

  • Readings before each class
  • Video homework (participants will be working in pairs)
  • Self-Reflection

After the completion of 10 lessons, there will be an assessment to evaluate your understanding and usage of the SgSL component, including grammar and syntax. To sit for assessment, all participants are required to meet the 80% attendance criteria.

Certificates will be awarded to participants who successfully pass the assessment.

Target Audience

  • Those with zero to little experience in SgSL or those wanting a refresher course
  • Open to hearing, deaf, hard of hearing

The programme was well-structured with grammar taught clearly and explicitly. There were many opportunities to practise. Class activities were also interactive and informative, and the teacher set the tone for a safe learning environment. It was great that Deaf culture was explained very clearly too!

I learnt a lot of practical vocabulary that can be used in meaningful conversations with Deaf people.

(There were lots of) interaction, passion/interest and energy of instructor and class, and very strong admin support and guidance.

[I enjoyed] that we can laugh at our mistakes, support one another, learn together and [my instructor] answering our questions outside class time.

I like that we got to learn Deaf culture and sign language vocabularies hand-in-hand, so it covers all aspects of communicating with the Deaf community! Also, the way the majority of the class involves practical conversations makes it easy to follow.

I like that the course is very well planned. There are notes and videos given for offline learning… There is progressive learning as the next unit is designed to ensure that we can build on our learning from the previous unit to scaffold our learning. The homework and reflection helps us with practice and the feedback is very useful…
I would say this course is professionally well designed and would highly recommend anyone keen to learn SgSL to sign up.
