Trainer’s Profile
Fern is an accredited social worker and certified adult educator. Beginning her social work career in 2001, she is currently a freelance trainer, facilitator and consultant, specializing in the area of suicide prevention and intervention.
Fern holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Second Upper Honours in Social Work) from the National University of Singapore, and a Graduate Diploma in Counselling Practice from Counselling and Care Centre, Singapore. She has practised in social service settings such as Samaritans of Singapore, Family Service Centre and Divorce Support Specialist Agency, where she provided support to individuals and families with varied needs through casework, counselling and group programmes.
Her passion in suicide-related work began during her work at Samaritans of Singapore where she served for more than eight years. She offered phone support and face-to-face counselling to individuals and families grappling with suicide crises and suicide bereavement. She also ran a support group for suicide survivors and managed a nationwide programme offering suicide bereavement outreach and follow-up services, collaborating with the Singapore Police Force and community agencies. Other key roles include providing training and consultation to volunteers manning the 24-hour crisis helpline as well as social service professionals in areas of suicide prevention, intervention and postvention.
Working alongside persons with lived experience, volunteers and professionals, Fern believes that everyone can play a part in suicide prevention and there is much we can do as individuals in communities. Since 2017, she has been engaged by several organisations including Social Service Institute, Singapore Association of Social Workers, Samaritans of Singapore and Family Service Centres for her freelance services. A registered trainer with LivingWorks Education for their evidence-based workshops – safeTALK and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) – she is looking to contribute in the work of building suicide-safer communities in Singapore and beyond.
